After the sudden onset of symptoms on 4/4/2021, Eric was admitted to the ER in Helena, MT and a brain mass was discovered. Later that evening he was flown to the University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City, to meet with his neurosurgical team (which includes one of his past students). On 4/5/2021, Eric’s 46th birthday, he underwent neurosurgery and was diagnosed with a glioblastoma wild type. As much of the tumor as possible was removed and he has since completed 6 weeks of intense radiation and chemotherapy at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City. Eric is now home in Montana in his second of six rounds of chemotherapy. Eric, and his wife Johnanna, made a promise that they would have one adventure for each treatment. They have kept that promise and have hiked, done backroad Jeep rides, kayaking, camping, and more. Eric’s signature joy for life and dry humor has remained a constant. Today, his fight continues, but he is turning attention back to his love for academics. Eric will return to teaching in the Carroll College math department this fall.
