Martye Guthe

As a 16+ year health and fitness professional who is also a 6+ year GBM survivor, I know a thing or two about the benefits of exercise in fighting brain cancer. I am a direct beneficiary of the incredible life-saving brain cancer research and treatments that are currently being developed at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University Medical Center’s Cancer Institute (and I’m also a member of the Planning Committee for the annual Angels Among Us 5K and Walk of Hope that raises funds exclusively for research at the Duke Brain Tumor Center), so I know a thing or two about the importance of raising money to support brain cancer research. As a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate myself, I am proud to support the efforts at BOTH institutions to find a CURE for brain cancer; I like to say that, while my brain may be at Duke, my heart will always be at Carolina… Ha ha!! In early 2021 I had the good fortune of being introduced to Martye Guthe by a mutual friend who thought to connect us, and Martye has since become not only a personal training client of mine, but also my cherished #BRAINSISTER. In a relatively short time I have come to witness firsthand the incredible strength, resilience, positivity, and grace that Martye has demonstrated throughout her diagnosis and treatment, and she is undeniably a brightly shining example of how to BE with brain cancer. I truly believe that there is nobody more deserving of this honor than Martye, and I think she would agree that, “Exercise IS Medicine!!” Oh, and by the way… yesterday Martye completed her virtual Head for the Cure 5K under her own power! (See her smiling face when she finished in the attached photo!)
