Incredible, Intelligent, Loving, Funny, Heroic – a few words many have used to describe Dave Bazzo. My favorite? my dad. In February 2023, a few months after his 60th birthday, I noticed something was wrong. His energy was fleeting, balance was off, and he was a bit more stubborn than usual. His doctor and long time friend ordered an MRI and I had no idea that leaving that appointment would change our lives forever when they found a larger, malignant tumor in his head. My dad has served his entire career at UCSD starting as a resident, then a beloved family and sports medicine doctor to many, a leader of the PACE program for physician assessment and education, with the culmination of being the Department Chair of Family medicine. All of this while being the absolute best ‘papa’ (dad), ‘zio’ (uncle), son, friend, and community caretaker. In March 2023, my dad underwent a 10 hour craniotomy followed weeks later by an 8 hour laminectomy. He was diagnosed with GBM and continues to thrive.
