My wife is from up north and had been on the ice since she was little. When she was 18 she had a freak accident at an ice skating ring and got a concussion. The concussion led to finding a tumor that she was born with. She was a military dependent from her father. The best neurosurgeon in the area didn’t take Tricare at the time (the second opinion did but felt the tumor was in a risky location and wouldn’t do it) but his team fought Tricare to start accepting it just for her. Five months after the concussion she was operated on and the surgeon wasn’t expecting what was found. They found a very rare form of brain cancer that would have turned malignant at about 30. The concussion was the best thing to ever happen to her medically. There was no chemo and no reappearance of the brain cancer. She’s now a medical advocate and fights for various awareness causes. She loves doing medical runs, or getting a medical charity bib for bigger run events.
