It is with deep admiration and profound respect that I nominate Dr. Michael Ward for the Keeping the Faith Award. Michael’s journey has been one of extraordinary courage, humility, and unwavering resolve in the face of life-altering adversity.
Diagnosed with a glioblastoma, Michael has endured two major brain surgeries with strength and dignity. Despite the physical and emotional toll, he continues to show up for life with the same dedication and heart that have defined his career and family life. Today, he stands among us—lacing up his shoes and running the race, both literally and metaphorically.
An avid runner, a devoted father to two remarkable children—Claire (16) and Evan (13)—and a cherished husband and friend, Michael exemplifies the very spirit of perseverance. As an Emergency Room physician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he is widely respected by colleagues not just for his clinical excellence, but for his compassion and grace under pressure.
Michael has been humbled by the support he’s received from the medical community, yet his focus remains steadfast: the hope for a cure—not just for himself, but for all those who face similar battles. His faith has not faltered. His hope has not dimmed. His story inspires all who know him.
It is impossible to speak of Michael’s journey without honoring the extraordinary strength of his wife, Marni Ward. Marni has remained steadfast at his side, offering unconditional love, tireless support, and a quiet courage that speaks volumes. In a deeply ironic and poignant twist of fate, Marni is herself a survivor of a brain tumor. Her lived experience has only deepened her empathy, and her resolve has been a constant source of strength for Michael and their family.
Marni’s strength is rooted in a legacy of resilience. In 2013, she lost her beloved sister-in-law, Brooke Hirsch, to glioblastoma. Brooke was a former Keeping the Faith honoree—an inspiration whose spirit continues to shine through the lives of those she touched.
Together, Michael and Marni are a testament to enduring love, shared courage, and the strength that comes from never walking alone.
Michael Ward is not only keeping the faith—he is showing us what it looks like to live it every single day.
