20 years ago, my father Paul Wicker had a seizure at work that changed my family’s life. Diagnosed with a Glioblastoma and given 6 months to live, my father has continued to fight every day since. After his diagnosis, he has helped others diagnosed with cancer and their families alongside my mother. The two of them as a team, guiding people navigating the journey. Over the years, he has continued to mentor people professionally in the growing tech community and even my friends. Having gained the nickname Sénor Paul, he serves as a space for love and support for my friends who have needed an extra father figure or adult male that shows up for them. The final person he has been there for has been me. Recently I have been incredibly sick and one late night when I was trying to say I could do it alone, he said we don’t do anything alone in this family and we won’t start now. Together he and I conquered Cleveland Clinic, many hours of treatment and reminding me to still find joy.
