Zy'Kierah

Sumter

I would like to nominate my brave, strong, and courageous 19-year-old daughter Zy’Kierah Sumter (Zy). She started having random headaches accompanied with vomiting, so we decided to take her to ER. After several more ER, urgent care, and primary physician visits only to continuously be sent home, I knew deep down in my heart that something was very wrong. On January 29, 2019 we visited the ER once again, and it was extremely packed that day. Too busy to really pay attention, the doctor just wanted to send her home. At that moment the mama bear in me kicked in, and I demanded that an MRI and CT scan be done. Once the results came back, we found out that she had a mass on her brain. On January 30, 2019 Zy age 18 was officially diagnosed with a Diffuse Midline Glioma H3 K27m Mutant cancerous brain tumor. She has undergone 2 brain surgeries, 30 rounds of radiation, 6 and ½ weeks of chemo with a 3 week break, and is currently doing chemo monthly. Even though surgery and treatment did not get rid of the tumor, she is still so humble. Zy’s life as she knew it was over, but my baby has grasped ahold of her new life and is walking in stride. Whenever asked how does she get through her journey she smiles and says “I know that God covers me”.
