We were originally from Michigan but my father always wanted to venture south to Texas and live in Houston. We moved to Houston in November of 1981. My father was a CPA and moved here to give his three children more opportunities after they graduated from college. My father loved all sports but hockey was his all-time favorite. Gordie Howe was his hero. He also loved to play golf.
Life changed for our family of 5, my mother Grace, me [Theresa], Tim and Nicole. My father was diagnosed with a glioblastoma on July 3, 1984; he underwent three craniotomies July, September and December of 1984. My parents celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on November 25, 1984.
On January 28, 1985, 6 months following the diagnosis, my dad lost his battle with brain cancer. There are days it feels like he has been gone so long and days it seems like just yesterday.
This memorial will focus on my dad. When we participate in the walk we also honor our aunt, Susan Comer Yates. She was my dad’s younger sister who 11 years after he died she was diagnosed with the same primary tumor, glioblastoma. My dad’s was on the right side of his head/near the ear, my aunt’s the left side near her ear. She lived 15 months after her diagnosis.
