We are fortunate to have so many dedicated supporters participating in this year’s Annual Head for the Cure 5K – Pittsburgh. In honor of Go Gray in May, we are sharing stories of those supporters, like the Pollack family, who have been vital in building awareness for the need for a cure for brain cancer.
In January of 2014 beloved mother, Dorothy Pollack began having difficulties with her mobility and fine motor skills. As a former stroke survivor, her family’s initial thoughts were that she had suffered another stroke. However, an MRI confirmed she had a large brain tumor, specifically a glioblastoma. From that day on, life changed for the Pollack family as Dorothy battled brain cancer through surgery, therapy, rehabilitation and hospice care. After a courageous battle, Dorothy passed away on February 27, 2014.
Within a short time, the Pollack’s were approached by another family going through similar circumstances. In honor of their loved one’s battles against brain cancer, the two families started the first Brain Cancer Awareness 5K for the Pittsburgh community. Through the years, the event has changed, but the mission remains strong; bringing awareness to brain cancer and honoring loved ones (such as their mother, Dorothy Pollack) who have battled the same diagnosis.
This awful disease not only impacts patients but their entire family and support system. Dorothy’s daughter, Jackie, served as one of her mom’s primary caregivers. She shared that “it was quite apparent how brain cancer affects all those around.” For Jackie and her family, joining a team to help plan and implement a 5K alongside others going through similar challenges, was a positive outlet during a very difficult time in their lives. The Pollacks experienced how friendships and support systems were vital to their journey and participation in a much-needed event. Jackie and her family invite others to “continue to bring awareness and raise money for research to bring an end to this terrible disease.”
Want to join the Pollack’s and the Pittsburgh community in the fight against brain cancer? Register for the 5K or make a donation today in honor of Brain Tumor Awareness Month! Funds raised through the Annual Head for the Cure 5K – Pittsburgh will support vital brain cancer research and programs at both the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative.
