Cleveland Team Spotlight – Team Deb’s Grand Cru

Each year, teams participate in our annual Head for the Cure 5K – Cleveland. Deb’s Grand Cru rallies behind Deb O’Brian who was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma tumor. By participating in this event, you are helping to support brain tumor research and programs at The Rose Ella Burkhardt Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center at Cleveland Clinic. My world turned upside down the afternoon of Wednesday, January 23, 2019. As a wine professional, I was setting up, pulling corks and starting to present new wine options to my customer. I was fully aware of my surroundings, when suddenly I lost my ability to speak. It was baffling and frustrating. What I didn’t know is that I was having a seizure, and I was about to have two more. After an unconscious ambulance ride to Cleveland Clinic ER and a battery of tests, I was told I have a brain tumor requiring surgery.

In a couple short weeks, I underwent an 8-hour AWAKE craniotomy, received a grade 4 glioblastoma diagnosis, and began a 6-week simultaneous treatment of radiation and chemotherapy. Although this was grueling, I fared very well. Currently I am in phase two of chemotherapy treatment, and I will continue to have MRIs every 8 weeks to monitor the tumor and surrounding area.

“STABLE” is now my favorite word! Meaning there is no new tumor growth or activity. Every 8-weeks I await my new MRI results, hoping to again hear that beautiful word. My health is monitored closely, and I am in very good hands.

To show my deepest appreciation for the care and support I’ve received in my glioblastoma battle, I formed this team to do something for the greater good. Additional funding and awareness are needed for brain cancer research; therefore, I act, I fight and I run.

I run for myself.
I run for loved ones: my partner, my family, my friends.
I also run for my fellow Glioblastoma warriors. You lift me up. I am inspired and grateful every day!
