Meet Ellen Smith!
As an oncology nurse, I see first hand the effects of brain tumors on my patients, their families and caregivers. Brain tumors are very visible diseases. Whether it is a physical, mental or emotional impairment, it’s easy to see the impact that the disease has on a person. Many of our brain tumor patients are terminal in a time when cancer research and treatment has extended the lives of numerous of cancer patients. Unfortunately, we cannot say that in the neuro-oncology world. We still need funding and research for breakthroughs so that we can offer our patients the same hope of remission or cure as so many other patients. Head for the Cure supports the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative and other research endeavors so desperately needed for our patients.
Another reason that I support Head for the Cure is a bit more personal. When I see patients in clinic, I’m bound by HIPPA and other privacy regulations. Patients and families need one another for support, guidance and to know “you aren’t alone.” I cannot connect families together in clinic without violating privacy concerns. However, at this event, my patients and families are able to meet one another, not binded by regulations. They get to meet, laugh, cry and share stories. You cannot put a price tag on that connection.
Ultimately, why do I support HFTC? My patients!
