de Groot, MD

Division Chief of Neuro-Oncology at the University of California - San Francisco

I am a neuro-oncologist having clinical and translational research experience in the fields of glioma angiogenesis, molecularly targeted, and immunotherapies. A broad clinical and laboratory background has given me a unique perspective on targeted therapy and the integration of novel treatments into the clinic for the treatment of patients with primary brain tumors. I have contributed to the clinical development of antiangiogenic, molecularly targeted and immunotherapy treatments for glioblastoma and regularly advise companies on such agents in development. I am currently the PI or co-investigator on multiple funded NCI-, foundation, and industry-sponsored funded grants. Additionally, I collaborate with multiple researchers where I provide important data for ongoing grants and clinical studies. Furthermore, I am the PI of multiple clinical trials involving novel agents being tested in patients with glioblastoma. Under my leadership as Director of Clinical Research for the Department of Neuro-Oncology, a multidisciplinary prospective tumor tissue profiling trial was initiated which has enrolled and molecularly profiled over a thousand glioma tumors which is being analyzed using a big data platform. Concurrently, our clinical research group has opened multiple biomarker-driven and neoadjuvant clinical trials. I manage preclinical collaborations with multiple pharmaceutical companies assisting with the development of drugs for glioblastoma patients. These activities have resulted in investigator-initiated clinical trials and influenced larger company-sponsored trials. I am Co-Investigator of the animal core and co-leader of project 2 of the Brain SPORE and co-director of the MD Anderson GBM Moonshot program. I served as the PI of the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) DEFEAT GBM grant. I am a Co-Leader of the Cancer Center Support Grant. Serving in this role enhances our ability to conduct research in brain cancer research utilizing our clinics and staff. I was recently elected to the CNS steering committee for ASCO. To date, I have over 123 peer-reviewed articles. I am also or have been a peer reviewer for 23 scientific journals, both national and international, and am on four editorial review boards. Currently as Professor in the Department of Neuro-Oncology and as a principal teaching faculty member for the Neuro-Oncology fellowship program, I have direct influence on the training for the next generation of clinician scientists. In October 2021, I joined the University of California, San Francisco as Division Chief of Neuro-Oncology in the Department of Neurosurgery.
